North German Confederation

The North German Confederation was the Prussian-led federal state formed in 1867 following Prussia's victory over Austria in the Seven Weeks' War. It encompassed all German states north of the River Main and provided the constitutional and military framework that was expanded into the German Empire in 1871. Bismarck served as its first and only Chancellor.
