North Macedonia
North Macedonia, historically the centre of Alexander the Great's Macedonian Kingdom, declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. A Greek dispute over the name 'Macedonia' blocked EU and NATO accession for decades. The 2018 Prespa Agreement resolved the dispute; the country joined NATO in 2020 and is an EU candidate. The 2001 Ohrid Framework Agreement ended an ethnic Albanian insurgency.
