Norway

Norway, under Danish and then Swedish rule until 1905, achieved peaceful independence. German occupation (1940-45) and the discovery of North Sea oil (1969) transformed the country. Norway channels oil revenue into the Government Pension Fund Global - the world's largest sovereign wealth fund. It joined NATO at its founding in 1949.
