Novgorod Republic
The Novgorod Republic was a medieval Russian state centred on the city of Novgorod, one of the wealthiest trading cities in Europe and a major hub of the Hanseatic League. Unusually for medieval Russia, Novgorod was governed by an elected council (veche) rather than a hereditary prince, making it a rare example of republican governance in the medieval world. It was conquered and absorbed by the Grand Duchy of Moscow in 1478.
