Ohio
The first state of the Northwest Territory (1803), Ohio was settled in three streams — Yankees in the northern Western Reserve, Midlanders in the centre, and Appalachian Southerners in the south — making it a microcosm of the nation. That balance made it a perennial political bellwether. Coal, steel, rubber and glass built a great industrial belt from Cleveland to Cincinnati.
