Indian Territory and the forced destination of the Five Tribes' removal before it was opened to settlers in dramatic land runs from 1889, Oklahoma layers an Appalachian-Southern culture over a deep Native foundation — it has the largest Native American population by some measures. Oil booms built Tulsa and Oklahoma City. The Dust Bowl of the 1930s drove a famous out-migration west.
