Ontario (English core)

Ontario — Upper Canada, the English-Canadian core. It was carved out for the United Empire Loyalists who fled the American Revolution, giving it an Anglophone, Protestant, British-establishment origin — long the staid 'Toronto the Good'. Industrialised around Toronto and the southern auto belt, it is Canada's economic and demographic centre and, with the bilingual federal capital at Ottawa, its political one. Postwar immigration utterly remade it: Toronto is now among the most multicultural cities on earth, and the province remains the English-Canadian counterweight to Québec.
