Ostrogothic Kingdom

The Ostrogothic Kingdom was established in Italy by Theodoric the Great, who invaded in 489 at the behest of the Eastern Roman Emperor Zeno and defeated Odoacer by 493. Theodoric sought to reconcile Roman and Gothic traditions, maintaining Roman administrative structures and law while his Gothic warriors served as the military class, creating a relatively prosperous and stable realm. Despite Theodoric's achievements, his kingdom faced religious tensions between Arian Goths and Catholic Romans, and dynastic instability after his death in 526. The Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian launched the Gothic Wars in 535 to reclaim Italy, and after nearly twenty years of devastating conflict, the last Ostrogothic king Teia was killed in 553, ending the kingdom and restoring nominal Roman control over a badly depopulated peninsula.
