Patagonia
Patagonia — the southern frontier. It lay effectively outside Argentine control until the Welsh founded Y Wladfa in the Chubut valley in 1865 and the army's 1879 'Conquest of the Desert' crushed the Mapuche and Tehuelche and seized the south. That violent, late settlement left a thinly peopled land of sheep estancias, Welsh chapels (the eisteddfod survives at Gaiman), oil at Comodoro Rivadavia and Alpine-style resorts at Bariloche — a country of glaciers, lakes and relentless wind unlike anywhere else in Argentina.
