Princely State of Jhansi
The Princely State of Jhansi was a Maratha-ruled princely state in central India, under the suzerainty of the British East India Company. After the death of Maharaja Gangadhar Rao in 1853, the British applied the Doctrine of Lapse and refused to recognise his adopted heir, annexing the state. Rani Lakshmibai became a central figure of the 1857 Indian Rebellion, leading the defense of Jhansi against British forces before falling in battle at Gwalior in June 1858.
