Republic of Genoa

A major medieval and early modern maritime republic whose merchant fleets and colonies stretched from the western Mediterranean to the Black Sea, Genoa was Pisa's principal rival for control of Corsica, Sardinia, and Tyrrhenian trade until its decisive naval victory at Meloria in 1284, and later financed much of Spain's early Atlantic exploration.
