Republic of Pisa
One of the medieval Italian maritime republics, Pisa built a Mediterranean trading and naval empire from the 11th century, contesting Genoa for control of Corsica, Sardinia, and Tyrrhenian trade routes, until its 1284 naval defeat at Meloria broke its sea power and its territory was absorbed by Florence in 1406.
