A wealthy medieval Tuscan banking republic and Florence's chief regional rival, traditionally aligned with the Ghibelline (pro-imperial) faction against Guelph (pro-papal) Florence, until its final defeat and absorption into the Medici-ruled Duchy of Florence in 1555.
