Romania
Romania was formed by the union of the Danubian Principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia in 1859, gaining full independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1878. It expanded greatly after WWI (acquiring Transylvania, Bessarabia, and Bukovina), fought on the Allied side in both World Wars, and became a communist state under Soviet influence from 1947 to 1989.
