Rwanda
Rwanda, a small Great Lakes nation, was colonised by Germany and then Belgium. Colonial administration hardened Hutu-Tutsi distinctions. The 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, in which approximately 800,000 people were killed in 100 days, was the defining catastrophe of the post-Cold War world. Under Paul Kagame, Rwanda rebuilt as one of Africa's most stable and rapidly developing states.
