São Tomé and Príncipe

São Tomé and Príncipe is a small island state in the Gulf of Guinea off the coast of Central Africa, comprising two main volcanic islands. A former Portuguese colony developed around sugar and later cocoa plantations, it became independent in 1975. One of Africa's smallest states by population, its capital is São Tomé.
