Samnite Confederation
A league of Oscan-speaking peoples in the southern Apennines and Rome's most dangerous Italian rival, fighting three wars against it across half a century. Their mountain warfare inflicted the humiliation of the Caudine Forks and is generally credited with pushing Rome to abandon the phalanx for the manipular legion.
