San Marino
San Marino claims to be the world's oldest republic (founded 301 CE, by tradition), a landlocked microstate within Italy. The Captain-Regent system has governed since 1243, with two captains serving six-month terms. It maintained independence through medieval and Renaissance periods by balancing between larger powers, survived occupation by Napoleon and Garibaldi, and joined the UN in 1992.
