Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone is a West African state on the Atlantic coast, whose capital Freetown was founded as a settlement for freed slaves. A former British colony, it became independent in 1961. It endured a brutal civil war in the 1990s, partly fuelled by its diamond wealth, before recovering in the 2000s. Its capital is Freetown.
