South Carolina
A Deep South plantation society built on rice and then cotton, South Carolina had a Black enslaved majority for much of its history and the most uncompromising planter aristocracy in the Union. It led the nullification crisis of 1832 and was the first state to secede in December 1860; the war began at Fort Sumter in Charleston harbour. Its Lowcountry Gullah culture remains a distinctive African-American heritage.
