South Vietnam

The Republic of Vietnam was established on October 26, 1955, under Ngo Dinh Diem following the country's partition at the 17th parallel under the 1954 Geneva Accords. Backed by the United States, which provided massive military and economic assistance and eventually committed over 500,000 combat troops, the RVN fought a protracted counterinsurgency against the Viet Cong and conventional war against North Vietnam. Despite American support, the government suffered from persistent political instability, corruption, and inability to build broad legitimacy. Following the US withdrawal under the Paris Peace Accords (1973), South Vietnam fell to a North Vietnamese offensive on April 30, 1975.
