Sudan

Sudan is a large North-east African state on the Red Sea, divided by the Nile and bridging the Arab and sub-Saharan worlds. A former Anglo-Egyptian condominium, it became independent in 1956. Its history has been shaped by long civil wars, the secession of South Sudan in 2011, and recurrent military rule. Its capital is Khartoum at the confluence of the Blue and White Niles.
