Sultanate of Malacca
The dominant entrepôt of the Strait that bears its name, commanding the passage between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea and the spread of Islam through maritime Southeast Asia. Its capture by Albuquerque in 1511 gave Portugal the chokepoint rather than the trade, which simply moved to rival ports.
