Suriname

Dutch Suriname was a Netherlands plantation colony on the northern coast of South America, long centred on sugar and other crops produced by enslaved Africans and later indentured labourers from Asia. This history gave rise to one of the most ethnically varied societies in the Americas. It became the independent republic of Suriname in 1975.
