Tajikistan
Tajikistan declared independence from the Soviet Union on September 9, 1991, and joined the CIS. It was the only post-Soviet state to immediately plunge into full-scale civil war (1992–1997), fought between the Russian-backed former communist government and a coalition of Islamist and democratic opposition forces, resulting in 50,000–100,000 deaths.
