Tennessee

Settled from the Appalachian backcountry, Tennessee spans three regions — the eastern mountains (Unionist in the Civil War), the Middle Basin around Nashville, and the western Delta around Memphis. The last state to secede and the first readmitted, it saw some of the war's bloodiest fighting. Nashville and Memphis made it a wellspring of American music, from country to blues and rock and roll.
