Territory of Papua and New Guinea

The Territory of Papua and New Guinea was an Australian-administered territory in the southwestern Pacific, covering the eastern half of New Guinea and adjacent islands. Combining a former British possession with a former German colony placed under Australian trusteeship, it was governed by Australia until it gained independence as Papua New Guinea in 1975.
