Texas
Spanish and then Mexican before winning independence as a republic in 1836 and joining the Union in 1845, Texas is a three-culture state: East Texas cotton plantations (Deep South), the Hispanic borderlands of the south and west (El Norte), and an Anglo-Appalachian centre. Its annexation helped trigger the Mexican–American War. Cattle and then oil built its wealth, and it is now the nation's second-largest state in people and economy.
