Tlaxcala
An independent confederation encircled by Aztec territory and never conquered by it, kept as a standing enemy through the ritualised flower wars. Its alliance with Cortés supplied the great majority of the force that destroyed Tenochtitlan, which is why the conquest is better read as an indigenous war with Spanish participation than as a Spanish one.
