Vermont
An independent republic from 1777 until it joined the Union in 1791, Vermont was the first state to abolish adult slavery in its constitution. Its Green Mountain rural culture is egalitarian, town-meeting democratic and famously independent-minded. Dairy farming, granite and tourism shape its small, mostly rural economy.
