Vietnam
Vietnam, colonised by France from the 1880s, fought successive wars against France (ending 1954) and the United States (1955-75) to achieve communist unification under the North. The Doi Moi reforms (1986) opened the economy to market forces. Vietnam has become a major manufacturing hub and one of Asia's fastest-growing economies while the Communist Party maintains one-party rule.
