Washington
A West Coast state built on timber, deep-water ports, hydroelectric dams and later aerospace and software, Washington was Yankee-and-Midwestern in settlement and is progressive and Pacific-facing. Seattle grew from a lumber and Klondike-gold town into the home of Boeing, Microsoft and Amazon. The Cascades split its rainy, urban west from its dry agricultural east.
