Wisconsin
A Yankee-founded state reshaped by heavy German and Scandinavian immigration, Wisconsin became communitarian, reform-minded and the heartland of the Progressive movement under Robert La Follette. Its dairy farms made it 'America's Dairyland', and Milwaukee grew into a brewing and machinery centre. The 'Wisconsin Idea' tied its university to public policy.
