Wyoming
A sparsely settled Far West ranching, mining and energy state, Wyoming was the first government in the world to grant women the permanent vote, in 1869. The transcontinental railroad opened it, and cattle, coal, oil and gas have sustained it. It contains Yellowstone, the world's first national park.
