Yankeedom

Founded by Pilgrims and Puritans in New England (1620s–30s) and carried west across upstate New York and the upper Midwest. A covenanted society organised around the town meeting, the public school and a Calvinist ethic of the common good — prizing education, local self-government and moral reform. That reformist streak later fed abolition, temperance and public-education movements. Of all the founding cultures, the most oriented to collective improvement through government and civic institutions.
