Zulu Kingdom
A southern African state that went from a minor chiefdom to the dominant power in a decade and destroyed a British column at the height of the empire's confidence. Shaka took over the Zulu around 1816 and reorganised warfare in the region: age-grade regiments quartered in royal barracks, the short stabbing spear used at close quarters, the encircling formation, and the absorption of defeated groups as subjects rather than their dispersal. The upheaval that followed pushed peoples across the whole subcontinent. The kingdom was a standing military system fused with cattle wealth, and the king held both. Shaka was assassinated by his half-brothers in 1828; Dingane was defeated by Boer settlers at Blood River in 1838. The state recovered under Mpande and was inherited by Cetshwayo in 1873. Britain manufactured a war in 1879 over an ultimatum designed to be refused. On 22 January a Zulu army of some twenty thousand destroyed a British camp at Isandlwana, killing over thirteen hundred men - the worst defeat a modern European army had suffered from an African force - and a detachment was held off at Rorke's Drift the same afternoon. Britain sent overwhelming force, burned Ulundi in July, captured Cetshwayo and divided the kingdom into thirteen chiefdoms engineered to fight one another. Zululand was annexed to Natal in 1897. The kingdom's system outlived its independence as an argument. Zulu military organisation was studied by European armies for a generation, and Isandlwana entered British public memory as the defeat that had to be explained, which is why Rorke's Drift received eleven Victoria Crosses - the most ever awarded for a single action - within months of it. For South Africa the consequences were structural: the destruction of the last independent African military power in the region cleared the way for the mineral economy, and the labour that worked the Rand goldfields came in part from a countryside deliberately made unable to support itself.
