The Ethiopian Revolution and the Derg
In 1974 famine, mutiny and urban unrest culminated in the deposition of Emperor Haile Selassie by the Derg, a committee of junior officers, ending a monarchy that traced its lineage to antiquity. The Derg abolished the monarchy, aligned Ethiopia with the Soviet bloc, nationalised land, and unleashed the Red Terror against rivals. Under Mengistu Haile Mariam it fought insurgencies in Eritrea and Tigray amid the catastrophic 1983-85 famine, until its collapse in 1991.
