The Tikal–Calakmul Rivalry and Star Wars
By the mid-sixth century CE, the Classic Maya lowlands were dominated by two emerging superpowers: Tikal in the central Petén and Calakmul (the Snake Kingdom) in the northern lowlands. Calakmul's strategy was to construct a network of allied kingdoms encircling Tikal. In 562 CE, Calakmul's ally Caracol launched a 'Star War' against Tikal — so called because these attacks were timed to astronomical events believed auspicious for warfare. The attack resulted in the capture and sacrifice of Tikal's ruler Double Bird, and Tikal entered a political eclipse lasting well over a century. The rivalry did not end with Tikal's defeat. Under Jasaw Chan K'awiil I, Tikal rebuilt its power and in 695 CE captured the ruler of Calakmul himself in another Star War, turning the tables definitively. This rivalry structured Classic Maya politics for over a century and demonstrates that the Maya political world was a genuinely systemic geopolitical order with shifting alliances, proxy wars, and balance-of-power dynamics.
