Afonso de Albuquerque

Afonso de Albuquerque was the architect of Portugal's Asian empire, capturing Goa (1510), Malacca (1511), and Hormuz (1515) to control the key chokepoints of Indian Ocean trade. His strategy of fortified trading posts defined the Portuguese imperial model. He was one of the most effective military commanders of the sixteenth century.
