Afonso V of Portugal
Afonso V, known as the African for his military campaigns in Morocco, continued Portuguese exploration of the West African coast. He issued the papal bull Romanus Pontifex (1455) which granted Portugal exclusive rights to trade and colonise Africa south of Cape Bojador. His reign saw the first systematic organisation of the Portuguese slave trade.
