Amerigo Vespucci

Amerigo Vespucci was a Florentine navigator and cartographer who argued in his 1503 letter Mundus Novus that the Americas were a new continent separate from Asia. The cartographer Waldseemüller named the new continent America in his honour on his 1507 world map. His widely published letters shaped European understanding of the New World.
