Aurangzeb
Mughal Emperor (r. 1658–1707) who imprisoned his father Shah Jahan and expanded the empire to its maximum territorial extent by annexing Bijapur and Golconda; his 27-year Deccan campaign exhausted the treasury, while his reversal of the policy of religious tolerance alienated Hindu subjects and fuelled the Maratha resistance that outlasted him.
