Bartolomé de las Casas
Bartolomé de las Casas, the Defender of the Indians, was a Dominican friar who spent fifty years campaigning against the abuse of indigenous peoples in Spanish America. His Brevísima relación (1542) persuaded Charles I to issue the New Laws. He is considered the father of anti-colonial thought in the Western tradition.
