Boris Johnson
Boris Johnson was prime minister of the United Kingdom from July 2019 to September 2022, the journalist and mayor of London who had led the Leave campaign of 2016, took the office when May's deal had failed three times, prorogued parliament illegally, expelled the twenty-one Conservatives who voted against him, won the election of December 2019 by eighty seats with the promise to get Brexit done, and did, on 31 January 2020, with a border in the Irish Sea he then spent two years trying to unpick. He was in intensive care with Covid in April 2020, presided over the lockdowns, the vaccine programme and the highest death toll in Europe, and was brought down by the parties held in Downing Street during them, fined by the police for one, and by the lies about them, for which the Commons found him in contempt after he had resigned his seat. He was born in New York in 1964, educated at Eton and Balliol, sacked by The Times for inventing a quotation, made his name as the Telegraph's Brussels correspondent inventing the regulations of the Eurocrats, edited The Spectator, and was mayor of London from 2008 to 2016, the years of the bikes, the Olympics and the water cannon he was not allowed to use. He wrote two columns for and against Leave in February 2016 and filed the one for. The campaign's red bus said the NHS would get 350 million pounds a week. Foreign secretary under May, he resigned over her Chequers plan in 2018 and beat Hunt for the leadership in July 2019 by two to one. The withdrawal agreement of October 2019 accepted what May had refused, customs checks between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the election it won took the red wall seats Labour had held since the 1930s. The pandemic came in March 2020. He shook hands with everybody, locked down late, nearly died, and bought the vaccines early, which was the government's one clear success. Partygate broke in December 2021, the confidence vote of June 2022 he won by 211 to 148, and the Pincher affair of July, when he had promoted a man he knew to have been accused of assault and his ministers resigned by the dozen, ended it on 7 July. He resigned from parliament in June 2023 rather than face suspension, writes a column and memoirs, and is paid for speeches.
