Charles I of Spain (Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor)

Charles I of Spain and V of the Holy Roman Empire was the most powerful monarch of the sixteenth century, ruling Spain, the Low Countries, the Holy Roman Empire, and the rapidly expanding American empire. He presided over the conquests of Mexico and Peru, commissioned the New Laws (1542) in response to Las Casas, and abdicated in 1556 dividing his empire between Philip II and Ferdinand I.
