Charles VII of France

Charles VII (1403–1461) was King of France from 1422, initially disparagingly called 'the King of Bourges' for controlling only the Loire region while English forces occupied the north. Joan of Arc's intervention turned the tide: he was crowned at Reims in 1429 and gradually reconquered France, completing the expulsion of the English with the Battle of Castillon (1453). He reformed the French army and administration, laying the foundations of the early modern French state.
