Christian Stocker
Christian Stocker became Chancellor of Austria in March 2025 after the most difficult government formation in the republic's postwar history. Born in 1960 in Wiener Neustadt, he is a lawyer by profession and spent decades in local politics there, serving as deputy mayor and as a member of the provincial party organisation in Lower Austria. He entered the National Council only in 2019 and became the People's Party's general secretary in 2022, a role in which he was known for combative parliamentary work rather than for a national profile. The September 2024 election was won by the far-right Freedom Party with 28.8 per cent, its first national victory, ahead of the People's Party on 26.3 and the Social Democrats on 21.1. Karl Nehammer, then chancellor, had ruled out governing under Herbert Kickl. Three-party talks with the Social Democrats and the liberal NEOS collapsed in January 2025; Nehammer resigned; and Stocker, who took over the party, then negotiated with the Freedom Party and broke off in February over its demands for the interior and finance ministries. He returned to the original partners and formed a three-party coalition — the first in Austria since 1945 — sworn in on 3 March 2025. Its inheritance is a second consecutive year of recession, a deficit above the EU limit, and a coalition of parties that agree mainly on excluding the largest one. He is by temperament an administrator rather than a national figure, which is roughly what the arrangement required. The Freedom Party has led opinion polling since, at levels above its election result. Whether excluding the largest party strengthens or feeds it is the open question of Austrian politics.
