Constantine XI Palaiologos

Constantine XI Palaiologos (1405–1453) was the last Byzantine Emperor, ruling from 1449 until his death during the fall of Constantinople on 29 May 1453. He inherited a vastly reduced empire — effectively only Constantinople and a few Aegean islands — and spent his reign desperately seeking Western military aid against the Ottoman threat, offering church union with Rome in exchange. Aid was insufficient. When Mehmed II's forces breached the Theodosian Walls, Constantine reportedly tore off his imperial insignia and died fighting on the walls; his body was never identified. He became a legendary figure in Greek national mythology—the 'Marble King' who would rise again to restore Byzantium.
