Daniel Ortega

Daniel Ortega was a leader of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) who helped overthrow the Somoza dictatorship in 1979 and became the coordinator of the junta that governed Nicaragua until 1984, then president from 1985 to 1990. During his first presidency, Nicaragua was under sustained military and economic pressure from the US-backed Contra war. He lost the 1990 elections to Violeta Chamorro. Ortega returned to the presidency in 2006 and has governed with increasing authoritarianism since then.
