Donald Trump
Donald Trump is the 45th and 47th President of the United States, the only person to win non-consecutive terms since Grover Cleveland and the first convicted felon elected to the office. Born in Queens in 1946, the son of the property developer Fred Trump, he was sent to a military academy at thirteen, graduated from the Wharton School in 1968, and took over the family business in 1971. He moved it from outer-borough rentals into Manhattan, building Trump Tower in 1983 and acquiring casinos in Atlantic City. Six of his companies filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection between 1991 and 2009. From 2004 he hosted The Apprentice, which rebuilt him as a national personality, and he spent years promoting the false claim that Barack Obama was born abroad. He won the presidency in 2016 against Hillary Clinton, losing the popular vote. His first term cut corporate taxes from 35 to 21 per cent, appointed three Supreme Court justices who later overturned Roe v. Wade, withdrew from the Paris agreement and the Iran nuclear deal, imposed tariffs on China, and separated migrant children from their parents at the border. He was impeached twice — over Ukraine in 2019 and over the attack on the Capitol on 6 January 2021 — and acquitted both times. He refused to concede the 2020 election, and after a mob stormed the Capitol he was widely blamed for encouraging it. He was convicted on thirty-four felony counts of falsifying business records in New York in May 2024, and survived an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania that July. He defeated Kamala Harris in November 2024, winning the popular vote. His second term has brought sweeping tariffs, mass deportations and deep cuts to the federal workforce.
